During the week of May 26, Executive Director Phil O’Connor and Chair Rod Davis travelled to the Kootenays to meet with stakeholders in the region. The purpose of this trip was to strengthen relationships with local government officials and staff, and to meet with managed forests owners.
The trip included several presentations to elected officials and local government staff. These presentations were intended to increase the awareness of Council’s role as the regulator of forest management activities on managed forest land, as well as open up dialogue with local governments about forest management issues.
Council gave presentations to:
- The Elk Valley Communities (Fernie, Elkford, Sparwood) in Sparwood on May 28
- The Regional District of East Kootenays in Cranbrook on May 28
- The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary in Trail on May 29
Phil and Rod met with several managed forest owners to discuss the program and their current forest management practices. They also went on an overview flight of one of the larger managed forests in the region.
The results of this trip were very positive: it fostered relations with both local governments and managed forest owners, and it gave our Executive Director and Chair a chance to meet stakeholders and discuss directly the issues of interest to them. They came back from the tour with a better understanding of the specific interests important to stakeholders and managed forest owners.
