As an independent agency established by the Provincial Government, each year the Managed Forest Council must submit an annual report to the Minister of Forests. Council has now submitted its 2023-2024 Annual Report.
In 2023-2024, there were 287 private managed forests in British Columbia, encompassing over 803,000 hectares. These properties are located primarily on Vancouver Island, the southern mainland Coast, and in the Kootenays and Okanagan- Shuswap regions.
Council activities in 2023-2024 included: participated in the FPBC, UBCM, AVICC, & PFLA conventions, commissioned new communications display and information videos, continued a regulatory review process, conducted 45 managed forest inspections to assess compliance with the Council Regulation, hired a new executive director and office administrator, and moved the Council office to Langford for improved access and efficiency.
4.0 million cubic metres of timber were harvested on managed forest land, representing approximately 11.6% of the total provincial harvest. There were no non-compliance determinations made with respect to forest practices on private managed forest land. Managed forest owners continue to restock and successfully regenerate harvested areas consistent with and often exceeding requirements of the Council Regulation.
The Annual Report summarizes:
- Council’s activities for the year, including how well it achieved its objective and performed its duties under the Private Managed Forest Land Act
- statutory reporting requirements including information about the number of managed forests, area in the program, and number of inspections, and
- owner activity including harvesting, road building, and reforestation, along with comparisons to previous years
